Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has developed a head-mounted display, which combines object recognition, eye-tracking and augmented reality (activated by blinking!). The ‘Smart Glass’ uses a different chip for each function, realising ‘high performance and low power consumption’.
TheTotal power consumption is 75mW on average (maximum 131mW) – much lower than KAIST’s last HMD concept (328mW). The organisation says that the device can be used for 24 hours on one charge. Eye-tracking power consumption was very high, and KAIST used several techniques to lower this, including ‘Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling’, which dynamically switches voltage and frequency.
