Sony is planning a further 1,000 job cuts in its loss-making smartphone business in Europe and China, in addition to the 1,000 job losses announced last October.
Reports suggest that the main regions to be affected in Europe will be the UK and Sweden and that this latest round of cuts will mean that Sony’s total workforce in the mobile phone unit has been reduced by 30%. Sony announced earlier this month that it will stop producing new smartphones for the Chinese market, as well as being more selective in introducing Xperia models, because of the tough competition from Apple and Samsung (Sony Mulling Sale of Loss-Making Businesses).
