Intel SVP Kirk Skaugen has spoken about the company’s vision for PCs, specifically discussing three technologies: wireless PCs, eliminating passwords and enabling new kinds of user interface.
Speaking at an event in California, Skaugen showed how radio-based technologies make it possible to set a laptop on a table and immediately have the screen mirrored to a monitor, without cables. Intel is also helping to research wireless charging technologies, such as a product that can be attached beneath a table to charge multiple devices. The company previously showed this at Computex (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 24); it is based on the Alliance for Wireless Power’s Rezence standard.
To unlock PCs without a password, Intel is supporting the ‘You are the password’ (YAP) concept. Skaugen predicted that various technologies, such as voice-, fingerprint- and face-recognition, will be built into PCs next year.
The Core M chips, which are enabling new hybrid devices, were also discussed. These were previously known as Broadwell-Y; 14nm Broadwell chips in the mainstream Core iX line will arrive early next year.

We have seen several devices announced using Core M chips this year, such as Asus, Dell, Panasonic and Lenovo. However, sources in Asia believe that these chips will represent only 5% – 10% of most notebook vendors’ shipments next year. (TA)
