The YotaPhone 2, from Russia’s Yota Devices, has received an upgrade from the original handset (Display Monitor Vol 19 No 50) – notably in screen technology.
Like the original, the second-generation smartphone features both a TFT display and an E Ink screen. However, unlike the first device, the main display is AMOLED (5″, 1920 x 1080), not LCD. The E Ink screen, on the rear, is 4.7″ (960 x 540). Both screens have touch, with the panels supplied by TPK. Information can be sent from the front screen to the rear, for a low-power way to display information – which will remain on the screen even after the battery dies.
The YotaPhone 2 runs Android on a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor and has 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
Yota Devices has begun to take pre-orders from UK customers, for £460 ($720) ex VAT. The phone will eventually be rolled out to about 20 European and Middle Eastern countries.
