Xiaomi to Limit Expansion

Chinese phone company Xiaomi is to scale back its overseas expansion plans and concentrate on boosting production of its devices through Foxconn Technology Group. A spokesman for Xiaomi was quoted as saying that the company’s focus is to expand ‘one market at a time’.

The company had planned to move into Thailand, Russia, Mexico, Brazil and Turkey this year but has postponed the plan to next year. The four year old company has already spread beyond its home territory into India, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia, which has helped to take the company into the top three smartphone manufacturers, behind only Samsung and Apple.

Xiaomi has no manufacturing capacity of its own but is reported to be in talks with Foxconn about manufacturing phones in India and Brazil. Reports suggest that India is likely to be a focus for Xiaomi for some years which is why the company is considering adding manufacturing capacity there.
