7-Eleven Japan Tests Touchless Checkouts

What They Say

Nikkei reported that 7-Eleven Japan is experimenting in six stores in Tokyo with ‘holographic’ touch screens that feature a virtual touch screen but do not use physical touch.

The terminals cannot be used to buy alcohol, tobacco or ‘prepared foods’.

What We Think

I was intrigued by the restriction on ‘prepared foods’. I can see that alcohol and tobacco would need an age check, but food?

The image reminds me of the illustrations by Toppan of its latest developments in virtual displays (Toppan Develops World’s First Aerial Touch Display to Generate Images Parallel to the Panel), but Asukanet of Japan has also been developing this kind of technology (and we reported a demo with Panasonic at CES back in 2014, and we talked to the firm in London in 2017. (Aska3D is not ‘Just Pepper’s Ghost’). (BR)
