The professional display market, encompassing large-format flat panel displays and high-lumen projectors, has experienced significant shifts in pricing trends over the past two years, according to the latest all-displays sell-through report by PMA Research. This report, which focuses on displays 55 inches and larger and projectors above 500 lumens, offers a comprehensive view of the market through the lens of North American AV and IT distributors serving commercial sectors.
As industries began recovering from the pandemic, they faced substantial supply chain challenges. These issues impacted flat panel displays and projectors differently, leading to distinct pricing trends for each category. Throughout 2023, projectors maintained steady or increasing prices, a trend attributed to prolonged supply chain backups. The resolution of these issues for projectors didn’t occur until the end of the first quarter of 2023, allowing limited supply to sustain higher prices.
Conversely, flat panel displays saw a different trajectory. The supply problems for these displays were resolved sooner, around the end of the second quarter of 2022. Once supply caught up with demand and inventories were replenished in 2022, the demand for flat panel displays softened. This shift led to an excess in inventories and sparked aggressive price competition that continued through 2023, resulting in a YoY decline in prices.
