16 Shades of Gray: 25-inch E Ink Monitor Could Ease Eyestrain

What They Say

Dasung, has developed a 25″ monitor, the Paperlike 253, that uses an E Ink display. We last reported on Dasung in 2015, when it launched an E Ink-based display designed to be used as a second screen with notebooks. Resolution is 3200 x 1800 with 16 shades of grey, but no colour.

No pricing has been announced or shipping date although it will be “¥1xxx9” so between 10009 to 19999 Yuan ($1,500 to $3,000) and prototypes are said to have been shown to potential customers.

What We Think

There are undoubtedly applications for this display, but they would be very specialist. No colour or video means that it really has few general purpose applicastions. That is likely to mean a vanishingly small market. In other specialist monitor applications, such as radiography, there has been a move to modifiy or develop general purpose displays that can also meet the needs of radiographers. There is a video online. (BR)
