YouTube is launching a live linear TV service in the US for $35 per month. The service will include channels from the most popular cable networks plus a cloud DVR with unlimited storage. The new service, YouTube TV, will offer live TV streaming from ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, regional sports networks and from more than 40 cable networks, for a monthly fee of $35.
Google hopes that the cloud DVR service with no storage limit, will differentiate YouTube TV from ‘the rest of the pack’. The service will work on mobiles, tablets, PCs and smart TVs. Both Android and iOS devices will be supported as well as Chromecast. YouTube Red content is also included in the price.
Subscriptions can be cancelled at any time and the monthly fee includes six accounts, meaning that family members can have their own service selections.
The news service will be in competition with Netflix and Amazon in the US and will be launched in the next few months.
No plans were announced for the roll-out of the service to other territories.
