Xbox One X Unveiled

Microsoft’s “project Scorpio” has now been announced as the Xbox One X. It will have the Scorpio gaming processor with 6Tflops of memory and 326GB/s bandwidth, as well as 12GB of GDDR5 graphic memory. The UHD Blu-ray drive will combine with the GPU to allow 4K environments and characters. Advanced liquid cooling is intended to ensure that the Xbox One X doesn’t get hot. The console has an HDMI 2.0 output port.

Xbox One X will support Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, which are object-based audio formats that can “put you in the center of 3D spatial sound”. The new audio formats will be supported for both movies and gaming.

Several games have been enhanced to take advantage of the console’s 40% increase in power and games which have been developed to support UltraHD will be able to be played “to their full potential”. The console has support for HDR10 and also support for AMD FreeSync. The console is compatible with XBox 360 and original XBox games.

It will be available from 7th November at $499.

Analyst Comment

There have been a lot of comments from analysts that the $499 price point will be too high. There is no question that the value for money of the hardware is very good compared to buying this level of system in other ways, however, consumers in the past have not bought consoles at this price..There are some reports that some games may be limited so as not to look ‘too good’. For example, a game that Sony has access to seems to be limited to the same fps as it has on the PlayStation 4, even when the hardware clearly is faster, (BR).
