Watchfire Signs Selected for Las Vegas

Watchfire Signs, based in Illinois, US, has been chosen to completely rebuild the canopy that is part of the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas.

The $30 million project will be completed in 2019. The company says that the new screen will be up to seven times brighter than the original and four times sharper, making it vivid even during daylight hours. The screen will also include new technology custom-designed for the project.

Watchfire’s design includes a fabric-like module that can be trimmed and resized into thousands of shape configurations without impacting the information displayed. The design allows air to flow through the modules, light to reach street level and the canopy to shed rain.

According to Watchfire, the project will incorporate over 12,000 m² of digital signage — more than twice the size of the White House — 16.3 million pixels, 49 million LEDs and 64,000 custom-designed 27 mm pitch modules.

Analyst Comment

The Fremont St Experience has long been an attraction in Las Vegas and I wrote about the first installation in my report on Comdex in 1996! Over the years, I have stayed in the downtown area a number of times and have watched the display. Originally, it used incandescent bulbs, but then switched to LEDs. I was once sitting in the ‘Four Queens’ hotel and was writing about power saving monitors – while I looked out at the display, which was bright enough to illuminate the whole street – it seemed very ironic!
