Vivo…Until Gionee Revamped its Own Product

China’s Gionee has gone and outdone itself, beating its previous S5.5 smartphone (holding the record for the world’s thinnest model) with the 5.1mm-thick ELife S5.1 (thinner than my mousemat! – TA).

Like the S5.5, the S5.1 has been recognised by Guiness World Records. The handset features slimmer bezels than its predecessor, but shares the magnesium alloy rim and Gorilla Glass protection on the front and back (‘so it doesn’t bend in your pocket’ – wonder who that’s aimed at?). The edges are also curved, for a more comfortable fit in hand and pocket.

The phone is a 3G model, but Gionee is offering a 4G variant in its home market. The display is a 4.8″ AMOLED unit (1280 x 720). Android 4.4 runs on a 1.7GHz octa-core CPU (a 1.2GHz version will be sold in China).

Gionee will roll the S5.1 out in Asia first. Pricing has not been announced.

With Blu’s licensing deal covering the S5.5, we may see the S5.1 in the West under a different name. (TA)
