A posting on the ‘Chinese Twitter’, Weibo, has revealed that smartphone maker Vivo is planning to create a 3.8mm-thick smartphone. Yes, that’s 1.3mm thinner than the current record-holder, the ELife S5.1 from Gionee (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 39). That’s a significant change when it comes to smartphones.
The big question is, ‘What sacrifices has Vivo made to achieve this thinness?’ Using an AMOLED display, rather than an LCD unit, would be a start, but the biggest user of space inside a smartphone is the battery. What sort of lifetime could be expected from a battery that can fit inside such a slim phone? Depending on the size of the device, structural integrity could also be an issue – as demonstrated by the iPhone 6 Plus.
