Verizon Trials 10Gbps Delivery

Verizon has said that its R&D arm has finished testing a fibre optic broadband system, which could reach speeds of 10Gbps – the intent being distribution of UltraHD video content. Currently, streamed UHD video takes between 20Mbps and 25Mbps, with even raw footage rarely requiring more than 200Mbps. The ‘next generation passive optical network’ (NG-PON2) uses a new optical line terminal, which creates four different wavelengths of light – each capable of supporting 10Gbps. Speeds of 40Gbps or 80Gbps are theoretically possible.
