Chipmaker, United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), recorded its highest quarterly net profit for two years of TWD4.6 billion ($145.7 million), up from TWD3.5 billion ($110.3 million) in the same quarter last year, on revenue which increased to TWD38.0 billion ($1.2 billion) from TWD35.9 billion ($1.1 billion). For the half year there were profits of TWD8.6 billion ($271.8 million) on turnover of TWD75.7 billion ($2.4 billion). The company said that shipments will probably fall by about 5% next quarter due to weakness in overall demand.
