Choong-hoon Yi, president of UBI Research, recently spoke about the potential for foldable OLED devices to disrupt or absorb the tablet market at the Latest OLED Technology Trends Seminar, which took place at COEX in Seoul, Korea late last month. He said:
“If foldable smartphones are launched and commercialised in earnest, the high-priced tablet PC market is likely to disappear. The foldable smartphone is expected to be implemented as a 5.2″ display with a 7.2″ display folded in half. In addition, a bar-type display is to be added to the outside to check time and other information”.
Yi then predicted that foldable smartphones would implement UltraHD, since their screen size is larger than normal smartphones. He estimated that 100,000 OLED panels for foldable smartphones would be shipped in 2018, with 2.83 million units expected to be shipped in 2022.
