The chairman of Tsinghua Unigroup, a state-backed Chinese technology company, has said it may be interested in a tie up with Mediatek, if rules on investment from China into Taiwanese chip companies were changed. Tsinghua already owns Spreadtrum and RDA Microelectronics. Mediatek reacted by a filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange a comment that it will “adopt an open attitude” within the government policies.
Separately, Mediatek said that it is seeing falling prices in the smartphone chip business because of the tough competition in Q4.
