A 2012 ruling, which added New York’s Times Square to the USA’s Highway Beautification Act, is threatening the iconic billboards. The 1965 Act limits the size of signs along roadways to less than 1,200ft² (around 110m²). Failure to comply could see about $90 million in federal highway funding withheld from the city. However, an NYC Department of Transportation official has said that the signage will not be removed, and the city and Federal Highway Administration are working towards a solution.
