A report in the Nikkei Asian Review suggests that Sumitomo Chemical intends to triple its manufacturing capacity to over 100 million curved OLED displays by setting up a new factory in Korea. The total investment is expected to reach $132 million with operation expected to start in 2018.
The new factory will enable the company to supply a total of 400 million smartphone touchscreens a year.
IHS Markit believes that 350 million OLED displays for smartphones were shipped in 2016, and by 2020 will top 700 million units to account for over 30% of all smartphone displays.
