In the UK, Sky Q’s new Ultimate On Demand subscription package will combine Sky services with Netflix. Users can sign up to Ultimate On Demand for an additional £10 per month on top of their usual Sky Q subscription. Current Netflix users can either continue to use the service separately via the Netflix app for Sky Q or shift their existing subscription across to Ultimate On Demand.
Sky Q Entertainment customers will receive Netflix’s Standard plan via Ultimate On Demand, while those signed up to the pricier Sky Q Experience package will be able to access Netflix’s Premium plan and its Ultra HD content. Either way, users will be able to download Netflix content to watch via the Netflix app on their mobile devices, in a similar fashion to how they can currently download Sky content to the Sky Go app.

We wouldn’t normally mention this kind of news, but Sky is both dominant in UK pay TV and also a company that has not been reluctant to invest and develop its business. It has been a close partner to SES in the satellite broadcast business. In one sense, this is an inflection point, if Sky has to join with “the enemy”. On the other hand, Sky launched its OTT-based Sky Now service a while ago, so it knows which way things are going. (BR)
