Sharp to Increase LCD Production

According to the Nikkei Asian Review, Sharp intends to double the workers at the Kameyama plant, on the production of LCD panels for smartphone and camera parts. The plant is situated in western Japan’s Mie Prefecture, and will supply the parts to Apple and other companies. At the end of last year, 2,067 people were working at the plant on a consolidated basis, and Sharp wants to increase this number to 4,000. The expansion is expected to start July at the earliest.

Sharp also plans to increase the small number of workers that are on fixed-term contracts, as well as reassigning current employees to the plant.

The production of small and midsized LCD panels is mainly an automated process with little manual effort required, but assembly is carried out by hand.
