Last month (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 37), Sharp announced that it would begin mass-production of its MEMS-IGZO displays (Display Monitor Vol 20 No 22) in 2017. Much earlier than this date, however, the company has now said that it will launch a tablet using the technology in Japan, in the first half of next year.
Sharp’s 7″ tablet will have 1280 x 800 resolution and use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, running Android 4.4. Both Wi-Fi and 3G/4G versions will be available. IPX5/IPX7 protection will be used.
MEMS-IGZO is a joint development between Sharp and Qualcomm. It has extremely fast switching speeds and is unaffected by extreme temperatures, unlike LCD technology.

Presumably the display for this tablet will come from Sharp’s test line in Tottori Prefecture. A 7″ display was shown at SID 2013 (Display Monitor Vol 20 No 22) and CES 2014 (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 3). (TA)
