Sharp Improves Memory LCD Power Savings

Sharp has developed a new Memory LCD panel (Display Monitor Vol 17 No 26), consuming 0.1% of the power of current devices.

Designed for wearables, the 1″ panel combines reflective LCD technology with LTPS transistors. Unlike Sharp’s currently-available Memory LCDs, the new panel can show up to eight colours.

Mass production will begin in spring 2015.

Sharp’s Memory LCD panels do not use a backlight. Instead, they rely on ambient light and reflector layers inside the pixels to illuminate the image. Embedded memory chips enable more power saving, as the panel can ‘store’ images for a certain amount of time.
