According to Omdia, Seoul Semiconductor secured a 16.5% market share in the global backlight LED market in 2023. Seoul Semiconductor wants to world to know this because it has invested nearly KRW 100 billion ($73 million), approximately 10% of its annual revenue, in R&D,giving it an accumulation of 18,000 patents.
Seoul Semiconductor’s product portfolio includes customized LED solutions for TVs, monitors, and automotive applications. The company leverages its proprietary WICOP (wafer-level integrated chip on PCB) technology, a no-wire, no-lens LED design, with enhanced thermal dissipation, local dimming, and optical efficiency. Unlike flip chip technology, which requires bonding during the semiconductor process, WICOP LEDs can be easily surface-mounted (SMT) using the standard substrate bonding process. Seoul Semiconductor first developed its WICOP packaging in 2012 and has been building its patent portfolio and market position around it.
