‘Screenless’ Displays and Microdisplays Hit High Growth

Grand View Research, a US-based firm, predicts that the screenless display market will approach $3 billion in value by 2020. Screenless display technology aims at transmitting information without a projector screen or monitor. Holographic displays, automotive HUDs and smart glasses are all included in the category. Retinal displays used in VR headsets, which project content directly onto the retina, also fall under this umbrella.

Screenless displays have gained traction in recent years, due to growing demand for portability and the popularity of holographic projections. Breakthroughs have included bionic contact lenses, VR headsets and Google Glass. Space constraints on screen-based devices are a key driver for the screenless display market.

The global market for microdisplays will reach $1.5 billion by 2020, at a CAGR of 23.3%, according to a report on Markets and Markets (http://tinyurl.com/pk8wq2w).

LCD, OLED, LCoS and DLP technologies are all used in microdisplays today. The products have varied applications, from the industrial and military sectors to healthcare and automotive. Head-mounted displays are a new but growing application. However, although growth rate is high – due to the proliferation of HMDs – high manufacturing and R&D costs are retraining growth.
