Hot on the heels of losing its number one position in smartphone sales to Apple last year, Samsung did an unpacking event to wash the bad tase out of its mouth with the latest lineup of Galaxy S24 smartphones, including the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. Accompanying these devices, Samsung introduced Galaxy AI, an array of AI-powered features, and a new product, the Galaxy Ring.
- Galaxy S24: Retains the same display resolution as its predecessor, the Galaxy S23, at 2340 x 1080 pixels.
- Galaxy S24 Ultra: Offers a slightly higher pixel count than the S23 Ultra, at 3120 x 1440 pixels, thanks to thinner bezels and a change in aspect ratio.
- Galaxy S24+: Receives the most significant upgrade. The resolution has been increased to 3120 x 1440 pixels, matching the Ultra model and significantly surpassing the FHD+ resolution (2340 x 1080) of the Galaxy S23+.
The Galaxy AI suite enhances the new Galaxy phones and some Android devices with features like real-time voice translations during calls, on-screen text translations, and AI translations for text messages. Other notable functions include the ability to tidy up handwritten notes in Samsung Notes and format quick notes into summaries and bullet points. Galaxy AI also brings advanced photo and video capabilities, such as AI-powered HDR. The Galaxy S24 series allows for HDR-enabled photos directly on Instagram, a first for any smartphone. Other enhanced features, like Nightography and improved electronic image stabilization, are also accessible in third-party apps.
Samsung has also partnered with Google to integrate Google’s AI models and introduced the ‘Circle to Search’ feature, allowing users to search by circling objects on their screen in photos or videos.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra, the flagship model, boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, a 6.8-inch QHD display, and five cameras, including a 200MP wide camera and various telephoto lenses. It offers storage options of 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB and 12GB of memory. Pricing starts at $1299.
The Galaxy S24 and S24+ models are powered by the same chipset. The S24 has a 6.2-inch FHD display, while the S24+ features a 6.7-inch QHD+ display. Both have three rear cameras and offer different memory and storage configurations. The Galaxy S24 starts at $799, and the S24+ at $999.
Samsung also teased the Galaxy Ring, a new wearable device, but provided few details about its capabilities.
