Samsung to Buy 6.5 million OLEDs from BOE and CSOT in 2022

iPhone 2021 forecast

What They Say

The Elec quoted respected analyst Nakane-san of Mizhuo Securities as saying at the UBI Conference in Korea as saying that last year Samsung bought 800K OLEDs from BOE and CSOT of China, but that this would rise to 3.5 million from BOE and 3 million from CSOT this year. Last year, the firm bought 140.8 million with 99% coming from its own Samsung Display (SDC) operation. This year he expects Samsung Electronics to buy 155.5 million, with 149 million coming from SDC.

He believes that the panels will be used in the A73 at the upper end of the A series.

He is also quoted as saying that Apple will buy 223 million OLEDs this year, up from 181.5 million in 2021.

Out of the 2022 total, Cupertino is expected to procure 137 million units, or 67%, from Samsung Display, 55 million units, or 25%, from LG Display and 31 million units, or 14%, from BOE, Nakane said.

Separately, YicaiGlobal (via OLED Info) said that BOE is aiming to ship more than 100 million flexible OLEDs this year, up from 60 million in 2021. The firm’s output exceeded 10 million per month for the first time in December 2021.

What We Think

The trend to increase purchases outside the Samsung group is likely to continue, I think, as the Chinese get their quality and yields up. Samsung Electronics is likely to want to keep buying from others to maintain pressure on SDC over pricing. Sadly, it looks as though Nakane-san will not be at the Display Week Business Conference this year. He always provides a huge amount of useful material. (BR)
