What They Say
Samsung Display put out a press release that said that its QD-OLEDs have been certified by SGS for “Outstanding Picture Quality”. Among the parameters tested was colour gamut coverage which is said to be >90% of Rec. 2020 and colour volume at 120% of DCI-P3.
In terms of viewing angle, the firm said that its own tests showed that when viewing a 65″ TV from a 60° angle, the QD-OLED maintained more than 80% of the frontal luminance, whereas WOLED and LCD displays of the same size dropped to 53% and 35%, respectively.
What We Think
I’m not sure that this kind of certification helps very much in marketing terms, but it does help people like me who don’t have sophisticated test facilities to accept the data as being accurately measured. In the end, it’s the experience of customers seeing the displays that will drive acceptance. There’s little doubt now that the QD-OLED technology will mean a significant improvement for users. Then again, if SDC had not been confident that it would achieve this level of performance, it would not have invested so much in the technology. (BR)
