Samsung President Announces August Release for “The Wall” TV

Han Jong-hee, President of Samsung’s Visual Display Business has not only denied speculation that the company is preparing to drop its QLED TV brand in favour of OLED technology, but in the same breath, also stated that its 146″ Micro-LED TV, dubbed “The Wall”, will go on sale in August.

Samsung recently revealed a business version of The Wall, available in custom screen sizes above or below the 146″ standard. (Samsung Introduces The Wall Professional For Improved Commercial Content Delivery At ISE 2018)

Korean sources had been saying this week that Samsung was back to developing an OLED-like technology with blue OLED material and red and green QDs to photoconvert. The company also said that such 55″ and 65″ displays had been privately shown at CES. The comments from Han Jong-hee are intended to stop this speculation.

In the last couple of months, I have talked to a lot of people in QDs and LEDs, and there seems to be some concensus that QD conversion really could help with LEDs, so that all colour LEDs are based on GAN and blue, with the QDs doing the conversion.

Nanosys showed electrically emissive QDs in its LVH suite at CES, but the brightness was well below commercial levels and I have spoken to several experts who believe that the bottleneck will be getting as much efficiency as you can get from LED + photoconversion, so that’s where I’m placing my current bet. If Samsung agrees, then the current emphasis on both QDs and LEDs would make a lot of sense.

I have spoken to LGD about the idea of blue OLED with QD conversion, as I proposed it more than a year ago, but just as OLED has become like a religious no-no for Samsung, QD has become the same for LG. Of course, basing the QD on blue material, when it is the weakest option, is also not a great idea! It’s clear from recent news at Kyulux and Cynora that an instant solution to the blue problem is still some way away! (BR)
