Korea’s UBI Research estimates that Samsung Display’s OLED shipments now represent 95% of the global total, as rising numbers of smartphone makers adopt its AMOLED panels.
In Q1’16, 91.3 million OLED displays were shipped worldwide, says UBI. Samsung was responsible for making 86.7 million of these. It is thought that SDC’s dominance will be extended by Apple’s adoption of OLED technology in the iPhone next year.
Flexible OLEDs, such as that used in the Galaxy Edge series, made up 14% of SDC’s total shipments. This figure is expected to ‘surge’ in coming years.
LG Display, through its OLED TV panels, also saw an annual rise in shipments, almost quadrupling YoY. These two companies lead the OLED market, although Chinese firms are seeking to enter the space. AUO, BOE, Visionox and Tianma have all begun OLED production.
UBI says that SDC plans to increase the production capacity of its A3 plant, from 15,000 substrates per month to 105,000 units, by the end of 2017.
