Samsung Electronics is taking a hit among Korean investors as concerns grow over its semiconductor business. As such, Samsung Display plans to enhance its production of small and mid-sized OLED panels by 10% in 2025, targeting an output of 475.6 million units, up from 432.2 million this year. This production increase is designed to meet rising demand in high-value segments, such as tablets and foldable displays.
Samsung Display | 2024 Production (millions) | 2025 Production (millions) | Percentage Increase |
Small and Mid-Sized OLED Panels | 432.2 | 475.6 | 10% |
IT Rigid OLED Panels | 8 | 12.5 | 56% |
Foldable Displays | 5 | 12.5 | 150% |
In terms of focus areas, Samsung Display aims to produce 12.5 million units of IT rigid OLED panels, a 56% increase, alongside 12.5 million foldable displays—a 150% growth. This expansion is intended to cater specifically to devices like the Galaxy Z Fold series. Additionally, Samsung is capitalizing on the tablet market’s shift from LCD to OLED technology, setting a production target of 11.25 million OLED panels for tablets in 2025 to meet anticipated demand. This despite the less than stellar performance of OLED tablets in 2024, but Samsung expects more demand next year. Samsung had already said back in April that it would be investing $3.1 billion in tablet and laptop OLED production by 2026.
Samsung faces increasing competition in the OLED supply chain as major clients, particularly Apple, diversify their suppliers by sourcing panels from other companies like LG Display and BOE. This competitive landscape presents challenges for Samsung, particularly in securing orders for iPhone and iPad displays.
