Samsung Display developing thinner QD-OLED panels

What They Say

The Elec reports on the basis of information from Taiwan’s ETRI research organisation at IMID that Samsung Display is looking to develop thinner QD-OLED panels by removing one of the glass substrates. At the moment, one carries the TFT backplane and the other has the QD conversion layer. The new idea, known as ‘stacked QD-OLED’ puts the QD color conversion layer directly above the emission layer stacked on top of the TFT glass substrate.

Commercialisation would not be until ‘after 2024’.

What We Think

The reduction in layers should reduce the cost, weight and bulk but also makes it considerably easier to make rollable or foldable versions of the display.
