Samsung revealed some new LCD and LED products at NAB. For example, the QM98F 98” is a new edge-lit 4K/UHD LED Smart Signage Display. These are based on TV components and panels, but have better thermal control so they can be used in 24/7 operation. They also include Samsung’s O/S Tizen as well as HDMI 2.0 connectivity. Most interestingly, the line is due to be refreshed with quantum dot technology and will be classified as QLED displays by Samsung. These should roll out in Q3’17 with more details to follow at InfoComm. Other panels in this series include edge-lit 4K displays at 49”, 55”, 65”, 75” and 85”. Samsung is targeting these as projector replacement panels.
The IF015H is a new 1.5mm fine pitch LED module that now adds HDR10 support and improved calibration. This product line allows front and rear access and joins 2.0 and 2.5mm options in this line. The advanced factory calibration included in the LED modules deliver color and brightness uniformity equivalent to LCD videowall based technology, providing broadcast professionals an option to fine-tune their color even further with the advanced color management tool, which is intended to provide a simple, user-friendly interface. The Indoor Fine Pixel Pitch Direct-View LED Solutions also feature both FHD and UHD capable Signal Boxes (S-Box) that delivers content to the video wall, as well as housing the display’s MagicInfo professional content management software and media player functionality.
Samsung had a demo of the HDR capability of the display at NAB but it was not very convincing. They used the 1.5mm wall to show the previous version with 800 cd/m² of peak brightness next to the current version with 1600 cd/m². It was not clear that the black level was any better on the 1600 cd/m² version or if it was using a PQ EOTF – it just looked brighter. We were told the contrast was 5000:1, but it did not have an HDR “look”.
In LCD video walls, the company said the UH55F-E is new in a 55” size with improved color accuracy and brightness uniformity, which is achieved through precise calibration and panel technology. It offers 700 cd/m² brightness and a narrow 1.7mm bezel to bezel width. – CC
