Samsung and LG Benefit from Growing OLED Demand in China

LG and Samsung are benefitting from increased demand for OLED panels from device makers in China, according to new data from IHS Markit, as reported by Business Korea.

Huawei’s shipments of smartphones with OLED displays hit 6.1 million units during the first half of 2018, up from 2.9 million in the first half of 2017, while Vivo’s jumped up to 19.5 million from 14.6 million during the same period. In addition, Samsung supplied Xiaomi with 1.8 million OLED panels during the second quarter of 2018.

The adoption of large OLED panels is also growing among China’s TV manufacturers. Hisense and Skyworth joined the OLED TV group led by LG earlier this year and will launch new OLED TVs in the second half of 2018.

Korean exports of LCD panels during the first nine months of 2018 totalled $21.6 million, down 62.7% from the $57.8 million seen in the same period in 2017, according to local customs figures. Conversely, OLED panel exports increased 43.2% year-on-year from $85.9 million to $123 million.
