Rumour: Microsoft to Dump Windows for Phones

Microsoft is preparing to abandon Windows Phone and adopt Android for future smartphones and small tablets. So says the rumour (and we stress that it is a rumour) from Twitter tipster @MSNerd. The source says that Microsoft has signed deals with Dell and Samsung to load its apps onto the companies’ Android tablets.

Analyst Comment

OK, Microsoft did recently sell its Bing Maps assets to taxi firm Uber – but to infer, from that, that Microsoft will abandon its OS? We think that such a leap is pushing things a bit far. Also, consider that Windows Phone will soon cease to be a thing – instead, Windows 10 will be the same operating system across desktop, mobile and console.

Finally, Microsoft announced in April that it would be easier for Android and iOS developers to port apps to Windows 10; for instance, through API changes. (TA)
