Real Stops Use of Facial Recognition

The Real chain of department stores in Germany, part of the Metro group, has brought its use of eye contact detection equipment to an end. Cameras were integrated into screens in the POS area of 41 stores and data was collected using facial recognition technology.

Public pressure has now caused the chain to withdraw the system. Customers were concerned that data was being collected without their knowledge. The company insists that no personal data was stored or transferred, so it is not in breach of the Federal Data Protection Act, and this has been confirmed by the Bavarian State Office.
