Philips considers launching QD-OLED TVs

What They Say

Danny Tack, Senior Director of Product Strategy and Planning at TP Vision, who is responsible for the Philips-branded TV range in Europe told HDTV Test in a formal, and clearly scripted, interview that the firm is exploring the use of QD-OLED panels from SDC for use in TVs and that the firm has prototypes.

In the interview, Tack also covers a number of questions on new OLED monitors and said that the latest EX WOLED panel (with a heatsink) can now reach 1,300 cd/m² of output compared to 1,000 on the previous model. He also covers the latest Advanced HDR Tone Mapping and explains how it optimises content that may be graded at 300 cd/m² for display on higher brightness sets. There are three modes:

  • 300 cd/m² limit to match the ‘creator’s intent’
  • Slightly more output to stay close to the intent
  • Full HDR

What We Think

This confirms our speculation that given that TPV already has a monitor with QD-OLED and given that SDC said that it was working with another potential brand, that Philips would be the firm that would be the next to introduce a QD-OLED TV after Sony and Samsung. (BR)
