What They Say
Business Korea reports that Omdia has said that rollable TV sales will reach 3,000 units in 2022, rising to 74,000 in 2024 and 672,000 in 2027. At present, only LG Display is making the panels and LG Electronics is making the sets.
What We Think
As we reported earlier, sales of these sets in Korea have been tiny so far. (LG Stalled on Rollable Phone and Sells only 10 Rollable TVs).
The article mentions yields of rollable panels as being confidential at the moment. That will be a key in reducing the cost and enabling prices to be reduced. Of course, Samsung could use QD-OLED to make rollable sets. If, like foldable smartphones, they start to represent a serious share of the value of the premium end of the market, given that Samsung’s volume is likely to be constrained, rollable might be an interesting segment.
