Olympics Used to Test 8k, WCG and HDR

UltraHD will not be broadcast from the Olympics in Rio (IOC Has ‘No Plans’ for UltraHD in Rio) – but the format will not be entirely absent. Japan’s NHK will record at least some of the event using UltraHD and Super-Hi Vision (8k) cameras. About 130 hours of 8k footage will be sent from back to Japan, including some live content, for testing and comparison purposes.

The Olympic Broadcast Service (OBS) will also capture some events in UltraHD, using down-converted 8k; this will be made available to client broadcasters for testing purposes. OBS has said that it also hopes to experiment with wide colour gamut and HDR during the UltraHD tests.
