OLED Pricing to Blame for Rising Smartphone Costs?

As we patiently await the official reveal of Apple’s OLED iPhone on September 12th, there are conflicting reports coming out regarding the effect of incorporating OLED technology on the new smartphone’s higher retail price.

The price of the iPhone 8 is rumoured to be over $1,000, significantly higher than previous models. Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities predicts that Samsung Display are charging Apple around $120 to $130 for each flexible OLED panel, a great deal more expensive than the $45 to $55 LCD panels used for the iPhone 7 Plus.

Meanwhile, Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants, speaking to DisplayMate President Ray Soneira, has a different take. His detailed research in the area has lead him to estimate that each OLED panel is only costing Apple $45 to $50 more than its LCD equivalent.

Other sources have suggested that SDC will only be able to ship a limited number of OLED panels to Apple for the time being, which may also lead to initial low stocks and high prices.
