The automotive display market is undergoing rapid transformation, with OLED emerging as a key player in the evolution of next-generation vehicles. According to market research firm Omdia, the annual growth rate for vehicle OLED display shipments is projected to reach nearly 40% through 2030. This surge is largely driven by the rise of AI, electric vehicles, and demand for high-performance, energy-efficient displays in automotive interiors. OLED panels are now gaining traction in cars due to their superior image quality, flexible form factors, and lower power consumption. Despite currently holding only about 7% of the automotive display market, OLEDs are expected to dramatically increase their market share as automakers seek out innovative, customizable display solutions.

Leading the pack is Samsung Display, which maintained its position as the top vehicle OLED supplier for the second consecutive year. In 2024, Samsung shipped 1.64 million OLED panels for vehicles, nearly tripling its 2023 total of 600,000 units. The company also led the market in revenue, earning approximately $492 million from automotive OLEDs. Samsung primarily manufactures rigid OLEDs which are more cost-efficient to produce compared to flexible OLEDs. Although it has begun incorporating more advanced tandem OLED technology in select models, its main strategy is to keep focused on the more affordable single-layer structure. Samsung’s competitive edge could be attributed to its successful expansion into the Chinese electric vehicle market, supplying displays to automakers like Li Auto in addition to established brands such as BMW. Unlike some of its competitors, Samsung focuses exclusively on OLED for automotive displays, which has helped it consolidate its market leadership.

LG Display, while ranking third in OLED unit shipments with 400,000 units in 2024, secured the second spot in OLED revenue with $187 million. The company differentiates itself through its use of flexible OLEDs, which are built on plastic substrates and allow for curved or uniquely shaped designs. This technology is more expensive to produce, especially with LG’s preferred tandem structure. While this limits cost competitiveness, LG dominates the broader high-end automotive display segment by producing both OLED and LTPS LCDs. In fact, OLED accounts for only 12% of LG’s automotive display revenue, with the remaining 88% coming from LTPS LCDs. In total, LG shipped 17.98 million high-end car displays in 2024, outperforming its closest competitor JDI by 37%, and earned $1.584 billion in total revenue from this segment, twice that of second-place Sharp.

BOE is quickly scaling its presence in the vehicle OLED market. It ranked second in OLED shipment volume in 2024 with 620,000 units, up from 240,000 units in 2023 and just 130,000 in 2022. BOE also uses flexible OLEDs, but its revenue from automotive OLEDs ($176 million) fell short of LG’s despite higher shipment numbers, mostly due to lower average selling prices per panel. BOE’s growth comes as overall acceleration in China’s EV and advanced automotive technology sectors is creating high demand for flexible, futuristic displays are in high demand.
