Nvidia has updated its Shield TV media player/games console hybrid device with a 120Hz display mode, supporting TVs and monitors with high-refresh-rate capabilities.
High-refresh-rate gaming is in an odd position. While PlayStation 4 is still capped at 60Hz, Xbox One consoles recently received an update adding 120Hz support. However, the majority of console games are capped at 30 or 60 frames per second, so the benefits are minimal.
On the other hand, Nvidia Shield TV streams PC games, either from the cloud via the GeForce Now game streaming platform or from a PC on the user’s home network. These are more likely to feature uncapped frame rates, allowing players to reap the benefits of a high-refresh-rate setting.
However, current hardware limitations mean that a 120Hz refresh can only be used with resolutions up to 1440p.
Shield TV version 7.1 also brings keyboard-and-mouse and headset support for GeForce Now games, plus Twitch integration features, voice control capabilities for YouTube and the X-Ray feature for Amazon Prime Video, which overlays information about the content the user is watching.
The company has also released the Nvidia Shield TV app for Android and iOS devices, which allows users to use their mobile devices as a virtual keyboard to make logging in easier.
