According to the latest data from Omdia, NexChip and Samsung Foundry have emerged as leading players in the display driver IC (DDIC) market during the third quarter of 2024. NexChip held the largest share in both the large-area display and LCD driver IC segments, while Samsung Foundry led the AMOLED DDIC market, positioning both companies as key competitors in these segments.
Omdia’s research shows that Chinese foundries, including NexChip, captured 49% of the market share for large-area DDICs in the third quarter, a slight decline from the record-breaking 55% share they held in the second quarter. NexChip alone accounted for 42% of the market in this category. Taiwanese foundries such as UMC, Vanguard, and PSMC followed closely with a combined 38% market share. This increased presence of Chinese companies has significantly impacted the market landscape.
In the small and medium-sized display sector, NexChip remained the top player in the LCD driver IC market, while Samsung Foundry reinforced its dominance in AMOLED DDICs, driven by its partnership with Samsung LSI. Samsung Foundry captured 31% of the AMOLED DDIC market in the third quarter, while TSMC’s share rose to 17%, supported by LX Semicon’s production for the iPhone 16 series. UMC also saw growth, securing 26% market share, largely due to its relationship with Novatek. UMC is expected to continue expanding as orders from Samsung LSI are adjusted. Samsung Foundry and UMC supply DDICs to major smartphone brands, while TSMC primarily focuses on Apple’s iPhone.
