What They Say
Samsung Display put out a release that said that its latest OLED smartphone panels can reach 1,500 cd/m² with ambient colour coverage of 73% of DCI-P3 and ambient contrast ratio of 16:1. The firm pointed out that its display has been certified by UL as being sunlight visible.
What We Think
The new S21 Ultra has this peak brightness, but it is interesting to see that colour and contrast are maintained in ambient light (although the testing conditions were not revealed). Display Daily’s friend and sometime contributor, Ray Soneira, will be pleased that Samsung is starting to use performance in higher ambient conditions. In its quarterly financial discussion, Samsung said that it would get into new uses of flexible displays as well as flexible and foldable phones. That’s being taken to mean rollable devices. (BR)
