New Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 with DisplayPort 2.1

What They Say

At an AMD event to unveil the Radeon RX 7900 XT(X), Samsung teased a new Odyssey Neo G9 monitor that we expect will have a 32:9 aspect ratio monitor that will have 8K horizontal resolution. The monitor is likely to be formally announced at CES 2023 in January. According to the AMD event, Acer, ASUS, Dell and LG are also planning corresponding screens with DisplayPort 2.1 and high resolutions, with the first products coming onto the market in early 2023.

The new graphics card supports DisplayPort 2.1 using DSC (more in my Display Daily tomorrow) and will run UltraHD at up to 480Hz and 8K at up to 165Hz with FreeSync. It supports Displaylink at up to 56Gbps and up to 12 bits/colour.

In video, the board can support simultaneous encode and decode for AVC/HEVC and encode 8K60P in AV1.

What We Think

Well, this graphics card, which costs $999 removes another barrier to HFR gaming on 8K. It looks as there will a rash of new 8K displays. I wonder if the 95″ 120Hz 8K OLED that BOE showed at SID will make it to market as promised? (BR)
