The HDMI Forum has unveiled a groundbreaking specification designed to deliver higher-quality options for content producers, including TV, movie, and gaming studios, while supporting a wide array of distribution platforms. With increased bandwidth of 96Gbps and next-generation HDMI Fixed Rate Link technology, the new specification ensures optimal audio and video performance for diverse device applications. End-users can enjoy displays that support native video formats seamlessly, offering a reliable and superior experience.
The enhanced bandwidth of 96Gbps allows for support of higher resolutions and refresh rates, enabling data-intensive and immersive applications such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), spatial reality, and light field displays. It also supports commercial applications like large-scale digital signage, medical imaging, and machine vision.
In addition to video performance enhancements, the specification introduces the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), which improves synchronization between audio and video, especially in complex system configurations involving devices like audio video receivers and soundbars.
A new Ultra96 HDMI Cable has also been introduced as part of this specification. Each model length of the Ultra96 HDMI Cable will undergo testing and certification as part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program. Certified cables will feature a Certification Label for easy identification.
The new specification will be made available to all HDMI 2.x adopters in the first half of 2025, with notifications sent upon its release.
