NAB 2018 Introduction

NAB 2018 was as busy as usual (about 100K attendees), but there was little new from the display perspective. Clearly, 8K continues to be a topic of interest with an 8K displays from Sony, NHK, Ikegami, Sharp and Digital Projection. 8K cameras and other broadcast gear was also on display.

The second major category was professional monitors. Here we documented new or coming HDR/4K grade 1 monitors from Canon, Flanders Scientific, Eizo, TVLogic, Postium and Ikegami. These are coming at 1000 and 2000 cd/m² levels. Also coming are new OLED large-sized client monitors that may soon be officially used for grading of 4K/HDR content as well.

The third theme was LED displays. While there was not a lot of hard news, there continues to be a push toward finer pixel pitches, newer manufacturing techniques like Chip on Board and microLEDs, and interest in moving LEDs into the cinema market (we will have more on this after attending CinemaCon next week). – CC
