What They Say
iFixit had a look at a couple of devices recently.
- The Meta Quest Pro (the take apart used 146 screws!) which looks so complex that it may be unrepairable although it liked the pancake lenses. The blog believes that the detailed design shows that Meta planned to include a ToF depth sensor but omitted it at the last moment – leaving a ribbon cable that goes nowhere. There’s a tear down here.
- The site also looked at the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 and pointed out that a Microsoft Surface once got 1/10 0 its lowest ever score. However, Microsoft is trying to make the products more repairable and iFixit rated it 7/10 – the most repairable yet from the product line. It might get more when and if Microsoft delivers spares and manuals as it has said it would. There’s a tear down here. One of the key improvements in repairability was from the gluing of the display which is now much easier to remove without damage.
What We Think
It’s good to see that repairability can be significantly improved while still making a saleable product! As for the comments about the Meta headset, the late dropping of the depth sensor is certainly intriguing! (BR)
