Microsoft Research has developed an app called MobileFusion, which can 3D scan objects and load the data into a 3D printer, or use it for augmented reality gaming. The system works by stitching together 2D photos – requiring no hardware except your smartphone. The researchers are currently working to make sure that MobileFusion works with iOS, Android and Windows Phone, although are not planning a general release any time soon.
