It seems like the company was promoting its wares for the Indian market by announcing to the local press the Helio G36. The chipset is targeted at the affordable smartphone market.
The G Series of chips is targeted at mobile gaming, in general, boasting better graphics throughput, power optimization, and display management, as well as some tweaks to communications to improved bandwidth performance from cellular networks. The top of the line G96 has all the trimmings:
By contrast, the announced Helio G36 is a cut down version with less CPU power, less powerful display, and pretty average camera feature sets. You get what you pay for and judging by the specs, I think you can safely assume that the G36 is about 30-40% below the performance of the G96. You can expect to see the G36 in the sub-$100 smartphone category.
MediaTek does a great job of covering every tier of the smartphone market, and focusing on gaming performance, kind of like the way consumer PCs are sold, is a standout from competing vendors who aren’t as punchy and in your face with their message. You can’t really push a social media agenda with the kind of camera you get in the target phone category for G36 and gaming is about the only eye candy you can hope for to differentiate yourself.
